Day 3 of the NYCC. At a noisy corner of Javits, I sit down at #419 directly across from a live stage, with sculptur Grey of Carbon Fibre Media of Brooklyn, NY. We talk art, comics, the politics of comic books and I show my spectacular ignrance of comic book artists when Mark Texiera of DC Comics stops by. Grey's sculptures are in galleries around America and the world Website: http://www.carbon-fibre.me/
For nearly 20 years, Grey has worked as a writer, penciler, inker and designer for almost every major comic publisher in the industry including Marvel and DC Comics. After a brief departure into the world of animation, he formed Grey Publishing, and returned to comics, making his first foray into self-publishing with the release of the comic magazine "Carbon." Carbon-Fibre Media was conceived as a home for his creative ideas. Carbon-Fibre Media approaches the creation of original content with a vision focused on advancing the art of sequential storytelling. We accomplish this by focusing on the intent and function of creative media interfaces and refining the approach to address the demands of "new media." Our primary platform is the E-CELL, a web-based adaptation of the traditional comic that takes full advantage of the basic design elements of a comic book as well as the ergonomics of new technology...yet tells our stories in a more organic modus, scene by scene. We also produce busts, sculptures and posable figures based on our original properties out of our studio in Brooklyn, New York. During the WGA Strike, I had the privilege of meeting many of the members of the WGA-E. Men and women who write for Daytime, Talk shows, Late Night, Primetime. Among the gems of the WGA-E is Jerome Coopersmith. Jerome began his TV writing career in 1947, when Television was the New Media. Live, one to three cameras, exceptional writing. Jerome wrote for The Armstrong Circle Theater, Streets of San Francisco and Hawaii Five-0. Who knew then that "Book 'em Danno...." would become the iconic catchphrase that it is. Jerome has witnessed the evolution of both Television and the WGA during his 61 years as a writer. Jerome is also the author of the musical Baker Street, co-author of the musical, The Apple Tree, and has written several non-musical play based on historical themes This interview was recorded during the work stoppage.
My thanks to John Chatterton and Where Eagles Dare Studios in New York City for the use of their space.
